On February 11, 2015, Port Barre police arrested a 15 year Port Barre High School Special Education student, in possession a firearm and live ammo. Port Barre Police School Resource Officer received a complaint from a student that witnessed the suspect with a firearm.

The St. Landry Parish Council voted Thursday to seek a state Attorney General's opinion on whether sales tax revenue collected from unincorporated areas of the parish can be used for road maintenance and construction inside incorporated areas of the parish. A motion for the legal opinion came after parish president Bill Fontenot and several members of the council engaged in a heated discussion over a proposed intergovernmental agreement for road improvements made to three roads located within the village of Cankton.

According to Port Barre Police Chief Deon Boudreaux, the officer, Caleb Stelly, was arrested by the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office. Boudreaux said he does not know the details of Stelly's arrest, only that Stelly went to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office to file a domestic abuse complaint and was subsequently arrested for domestic battery.

A St. Landry Parish jury deliberated two hours Friday before convicting Kurt Dwayne Miller of negligent homicide in the 2009 death of girlfriend Laura Coates. Miller, 36, had been indicted on second-degree murder in Coates' death, which his defense attorney, Roy Richard, blamed on a drug overdose but which the prosecution said was a fatal beating.

Tour du Teche adds Red River race

The Tour du Teche race down Bayou Teche enters its sixth year this fall but organizers have expanded the paddler's marathon by offering an additional race, a long-distance, adventurous paddle down the Red River, the first of its kind for Louisiana. The 275-mile, round-the-clock marathon takes long-distance paddlers down the Red River until it reaches St. Landry Parish where At the end of "Tour de la Rivere Rouge," the Tour du Teche begins, a 135-mile, three-staged race from Port Barre to Berwick, Oct. 2-4.

Police officers here in Opelousas attended a two-hour long training on Tuesday with the topic being "Civil rights and how it pertains to the law". Corey Leger, Public Information Officer for the Opelousas Police Department says, "The civil rights class will help us in our daily investigations, dealing with the public and how to approach civilians and how to treat everybody with respect."

Student body president election ends in runoff

A runoff has been declared in the election for Baylor student body president between Houston junior Pearson Brown and Frisco sophomore James Porter. According to the results posted outside of the student government office, Brown received 1,057 votes, compared to Porter who received 771 votes and Kinghorn who received 699.

St. Landry Parish man gets 5-year sentence in 2009 death of girlfriend

A St. Landry Parish man convicted in February of negligent homicide in the death of his girlfriend was sentenced Thursday to five years at hard labor. Judge Gerard Caswell, of 27th Judicial District Court, handed down the sentence for Kurt Dwayne Miller, 36, who was originally indicted on second-degree murder in the 2009 death of Laura Coates.
